Greenwood Elementary School first opened its doors in 1925 as a two-room school. Through the years, it has been expanded to accommodate approximately 350 students. Greenwood’s neighborhood has also grown over the years so that today our population comes truly from all over the city of Waukegan.
We are proud of our diversity and while we celebrate our cultural differences, we still manage to create a sense of community that gives us strength and purpose, as we prepare the children of today for the world of tomorrow. At Greenwood, we reach beyond the basic curriculum to engage our students in a variety of learning activities that are both meaningful and enriching. The curriculum taught at Greenwood is consistent with the goals set forth by the Illinois State Board of Education. It is based upon rigorous, high quality local, state, and national standards and is delivered through exemplary teaching practices that are supported by a process of continuous review and improvement.
The Greenwood School instructional staff includes a building administrator, regular education teachers, grades 1–5; special education teachers; specialists in the areas of reading, music, art, physical education; and support staff that includes a school social worker, nurse, psychologist, speech pathologist, librarian, computer technician and many paraprofessionals.
Within six self-contained special education classrooms, Greenwood provides a safe and structured environment for behaviorally and emotionally challenged students. Special education services are also delivered to students within the mainstream via resource programs and inclusion formats. We are proud of our diverse and inclusive community.
At Greenwood School, we believe that we need to set forth clear expectations and work with our students to set goals and action steps to reach those expectations and, ultimately, to be successful. To that end, we have adopted the tenets of Vision Management, a program that promotes positive student self-management. All staff are committed to academic and behavioral excellence and are dedicated to creating a teaching and learning environment for our school community that will strive for excellence in every educational aspect characteristic of a vibrant, positive and collaborative learning community. Collectively, we are dedicated to working with our partners at home and within the community to provide our students with an exemplary education experience. |
