Waukegan Public School District 60

Hyde Park Elementary School

Hyde Park Elementary School is located about 45 miles north of downtown Chicago in Waukegan, Illinois. It is home to about 289 students, grades 1–5. The school is located in a cozy neighborhood and our students come from all over the city. Our student body is made up of a diverse group of cultures that only enhance our school’s population. This allows our students to learn about many cultures and really come to appreciate all people.

The curriculum at Hyde Park is structured in a way that all academic programs help develop basic and higher level thinking skills. We strive to provide our students with a balanced education including all subject areas, but focusing on reading and math. Our curriculum is aligned and rigorously follows national, state and local standards. Our teachers are continually attending curriculum development workshops in order to enhance their delivery techniques. We also work diligently to raise each student’s ability level and include all special education students in the regular educational setting.

Hyde Park’s highly effective staff consists of a building administrator, regular education teachers, a special education teacher, an L.D. resource specialist, specialists in art, music, physical education and a Title I reading coach. We also have a support staff that includes a part-time school social worker, a part-time school psychologist, a nurse; speech pathologist, librarian, computer assistant and several paraprofessionals. Our whole staff, including the secretary, custodian and lunch assistants work collaboratively to instill values that will prepare our students to become successful community members.

At Hyde Park, we believe that setting high expectations will allow our students to reach their full potential. We as a staff, also set high expectations for ourselves so that our students have positive role models to emulate. We have also implemented a nationally recognized behavior program, PBIS, which sets high behavioral expectations for our students. These high academic and behavioral expectations will allow our children to grow in a nurturing, consistent, safe environment. Finally, we are dedicated to involving our parents and community members in providing a supportive educational experience for our students. We feel that we go above and beyond to provide the best quality education for our students at Hyde Park Elementary School.
