H.R. McCall Elementary School houses twelve general education classes and eleven special education classes, pre-kindergarten through 5th grade, with total enrollment of 417 students. Our school is diverse in terms of ethnicity, special education, and socioeconomic levels. McCall School has received district and state awards for its student achievement, having exceeded state standards every year. All classroom instruction is based on the Illinois Learning Standards. In addition to reading, mathematics, science, and social studies instruction, all students receive instruction in music, art, physical education, and computers. Each student uses a laptop computer for individual instruction. Teachers have Apple computers in the classrooms that are used regularly for maintaining student grades and for instruction. There is Internet access in every classroom. Students visit an extensive school library on a weekly basis, or more. The Waukegan Public Library Bookmobile visits monthly to provide additional resources. Students in the intermediate grades may take band or orchestra lessons, learning to play an instrument of their choice.

McCall School is proud of its ability to provide services to its diverse population. Students with IEP’s and general education students spend a part
of every day together in an academic, fine arts, physical education or social setting. H.R. McCall School provides school wide Title I Services, offering support to students in need of supplemental instruction.

The teacher is the primary instructor and disciplinarian. Standards of behavior are uniform and positively reinforced by the principal and all teachers according to the policy approved by the Superintendent and the Waukegan School Board.

We at McCall School are especially proud of our staff and supportive parents. Our teachers are dedicated and highly qualified professionals. Our parents are active in school activities and support school programs through the Parent Teacher Organization. Through fund raising activities, the PTO provides Weekly Readers for every student, a field trip bus for every classroom, birthday recognition, and lunch on field day along with many other extras. A sound system was purchased for the gym. Playground equipment, an informational sign, and landscaping are other uses of PTO funds.
