AAMAI Key Strategies

These strategies aim to close the achievement gap for our African American males. Implementing these target strategies based on the Department of Equity and Inclusion's Equity Framework and data analysis. By implementing these strategies, our department aims to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment that empowers African American males to achieve their full potential.

1 - Culturally Responsive Schools and Academic Readiness

• Provide training on culturally responsive instructional practices and specialized equity coaching centering on African-American males.
• Support schools in ensuring African-American males read at grade level by 3rd grade.
• Support schools in increasing student attendance.
• Support schools in increasing Freshman on-track rate.
• Provide special programs that support improved reading skills

2 - Increase a Sense of Belonging

• Host an annual Student Summit that promotes and celebrates black culture and achievements and builds community.
• Coordinate structured mentoring programs (adult male/peer mentoring) for identified African American boys in K-12.
• Host regular Student Engagement events and/or activities to connect African-American males to new resources, opportunities, and college career experiences.

3 - Family and Community Engagement

• Offering resources and workshops for parents to support their children’s reading at home and foster a reading-rich environment. 
• Partner with families and the African American community to provide additional support through various parent groups such as the Black Parent Network
• Create shared power structures to ensure that families have a voice in decision-making.
