District 60 to Host Trauma Workshop October 30

Waukegan Public Schools will again host a special workshop exploring how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) affect academic performance.  The event, titled: “When You Know Better, We Do Better,” will be led by Dr. Kevin Brown, District 60’s K-8 Director of Teaching and Learning, will be October 30. 
 
Dr. Brown will discuss his extensive research on the topic of childhood trauma, and how that trauma can negatively manifest itself as children grow into adults.  This is the second ACEs workshop, following the initial presentation in the spring. Common ACEs experienced by children include: various forms of abuse and neglect, violence, divorce, incarceration, fear, shame, and many more. These traumas or stressors, are proven to have an impact on a child's behavior and ability to learn. During his presentation Dr. Brown will help attendees identify their own ACEs, as well as establish ways to assist students with the stressors be more successful.
 
The When You Know Better, We Do Better workshop will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30at Lincoln Center, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. It is open to all students, staff, parents and community members.
