Cold Weather Information From District 60

Cold Weather Information From District 60
Posted on 12/04/2019

With December now upon us, and extreme winter weather soon to follow, we wanted to take the opportunity to remind everyone of cold weather policies governing Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60.

On days when low temperatures or snowfall make it unsafe for students to be outside, District 60 may declare emergency closure of our buildings. The District may also announce abbreviated schedules by way of late starts, early releases or program cancellations. Generally, a late start will mean that classes at each building will begin roughly two hours later than normal, and will dismiss at normal times. Those schedules are online at https://wps60.org/our_district/delayed_start_schedule.

Parents will be notified if schools are closed, or if schedules are altered through the District 60 website, www.wps60.org, or by an automated phone call or text message. Additionally, important information will be shared on District social media platforms. Parents may tune into local radio and television stations for an updated listing of all school closures. Additionally, you can sign up for email updates via the District's Priority Mail 60 system at https://wps60.org/community/priority_mail_60.

It is District policy not to allow students outside for recess or any other outdoor activities when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, or when unsafe windy, icy or snowy conditions exist. Any and all outdoor activities that are scheduled on these harsh weather days will be held inside at all buildings. Additionally, when temperatures drop below 20 degrees, students will be allowed to enter all buildings as soon as they arrive to school that day. Principals also have discretion to cancel outdoor activities, or to allow students to enter buildings early, in the event of unsafe windy, snowy or icy conditions.

While District 60 endeavors to do its best to keep students warm during the cold, bitter months, we ask that parents/ guardians assist us by assuring their children are wearing the proper clothing. It is recommended that all students wear warm coats, gloves or mittens, hats, scarves and boots during their trips to and from school. Whether children walk to school, or wait at a bus stop, their small bodies are easily susceptible when exposed to cold conditions. Families needing assistance with cold-weather clothing may reach out to their schools’ social worker, or the District’s Family and Community Engagement department at 224-303-1036.
