Waukegan High School teacher Ms. Helene Duda was honored today by the Chicago Bears as a “Classroom Legend” during a special surprise ceremony in her classroom. The program, which is in partnership with CDW, celebrates Chicago area teachers who go above and beyond for their students.

Ms. Duda is in her 7th year at WHS, where she teaches driver’s education, physical education and health at the Washington Campus. She also works with the school’s colorguard, and organizes the Powerful Athletes of Waukegan Schools (PAWS) club. She was nominated for the award by colleague Ms. Megan Taylor, who lauded Ms. Duda’s dedication to WHS students, her work to create safe spaces, and her focus on ensuring mental health resources are accessible to students.

The program selects two teachers a month to recognize. As a Classroom Legend, Ms. Duda was surprised with a custom Bears jersey, a ceremonial custom football, field passes for an upcoming Bears game, and a $1,000 classroom award.

As a diehard Bears fan, Ms. Duda was thrilled to be recognized for her work by her favorite team.

“It was a total shock to be selected. There are so many great candidates out there,” Ms. Duda said. “I am humbled to be recognized by the Bears, to be nominated by my colleagues and I’m honored to be part of Waukegan Schools.”
