Waukegan High School Co-Principal Daniel Hill has been named the Illinois Principals' Association's (IPA) Lake Region High School Principal of the Year. Mr. Hill, who leads the Washington Campus and AOEC, received the honor from the IPA’s Lake Region this month. He is one of four educators throughout Lake County recognized by the organization. As the regional winner, Mr. Hill will now be a nominee for statewide recognition in 2025.

The award annually celebrates outstanding high school leaders who excel in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students, make exemplary contributions to the profession, and earn respect and acknowledgment from their peers.

Mr. Hill was nominated by his colleagues at Waukegan High School, who praised his transformative leadership and unwavering dedication to equity, inclusion, and academic growth, particularly for underserved populations. They commended his success in implementing innovative initiatives, such as a comprehensive school transformation plan that has improved performance and fostered a positive school culture. Colleagues also highlighted his ability to inspire collaboration, continuous improvement, and mentorship that empowers both staff and students. His human-centered approach has created a cohesive and inclusive community, reflecting his commitment to student success and fostering meaningful social change.

Upon learning about the honor, Mr. Hill expressed his gratitude and humility.

“This recognition is not merely a reflection of my work but of the collective commitment, passion, and resilience of our entire Waukegan High School family—students, staff, parents, and the wider community,” Mr. Hill said. “Every day, I am inspired by the brilliance of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the unwavering support of our families. Together, we have embraced challenges, celebrated successes, and cultivated an environment where growth and excellence are possible for everyone.”

Superintendent Theresa Plascencia praised Mr. Hill for his leadership and his work at WHS over the past several years.

“We are proud of Dan and thrilled to see him receive this well-deserved recognition,” said Ms. Plascencia. “He has demonstrated the importance of strong, consistent leadership and a collaborative, long-term vision. His ability to build capacity within his team and focus on student success is reflected in improved attendance, graduation rates, and stronger 5Essentials results.”

Mr. Hill has been an integral part of Waukegan Public Schools for 22 years, serving as both a teacher and an administrator. He has been Co-Principal at Waukegan High School since 2020 and previously held leadership roles as Principal at Clearview Elementary and Assistant Principal at Abbott Middle School.
