Waukegan Community Unit School District #60 is proud to announce that Waukegan High School Senior Yasir Espinoza has been selected to serve on the Illinois State Board of Education’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) for the 2025–2026 school year.
As a member of the SAC, Yasir will join select students from across Illinois in meeting with ISBE staff and stakeholders throughout the year to share student perspectives and contribute to policy development in education. He will also take part in the annual Student Summit and present a research project to the State Board of Education.
At WHS, Yasir is actively involved in the JROTC program, serving his regiment as an Armed Drill team commander and previously as a Company Commander. Outside of school, he is involved in several programs focused on policy, leadership, and consensus to build on goals.
In his role with ISBE, Yasir wants to explore different types of courses that can be beneficial to his classmates and inspire his peers to pursue positive changes in their school environments.
“When it comes to education, I always keep an open mind for the types of courses that could be advantageous for my school to include,” Yasir said. “I’d like to address the benefits of mandating or revamping some classes and curricula alongside other students who pitched similar ideas.”
