Join us for the world premiere of Un Solo Pueblo – a vibrant and emotional new work for concert band by award-winning Colombian composer Dr. Rubén Darío Gómez – on the WHS Spring Band Concert, Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 7:00 PM. This powerful piece celebrates the unity of Latin communities across the U.S. and beyond, offering Latin background musicians a chance to reconnect with their roots through music. Come experience this unforgettable night of music, culture, and celebration!

Commissioned by Waukegan High School—where over 80% of students are of Hispanic heritage—the mission of this commission, spearheaded by David Grayson, Director of Bands at WHS, is to expand Latino music in the band repertoire, where music and composers of Hispanic heritage are underrepresented. Waukegan High School and Mr. Grayson are taking an active role in growing this rich musical culture for concert bands across the country and the world.

Un Solo Pueblo blends tradition and identity through a rich musical journey. The first section pulses with 6/8 rhythms inspired by Danza del Torito (Mexico), followed by a lyrical waltz reflecting European influence. The third section bursts with the energetic rhythms of son corrío’ (Colombia) and Merengue (Dominican Republic), ending with a return to the opening theme as a symbol of homecoming.

Dr. Gómez, born in Zapatoca, Colombia, is a celebrated conductor, composer, and educator whose music has been performed across the Americas and Europe. He currently serves as Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville.
