Update Regarding Class Rank and Graduation Honors

Update Regarding Class Rank and Graduation Honors
Posted on 10/11/2024

Later this month Waukegan High School students will be receiving their first quarter report cards. As parents review those grades we want to remind you that this past spring our District passed a new policy regarding the elimination of class rank.

Beginning with the Class of 2026, class rank will no longer be calculated. In its place, we have adopted a Cum Laude honors system to recognize academic excellence. Students graduating with the appropriate cumulative, weighted grade point average (GPA) will be recognized with the following distinctions:

  • Summa Cum Laude 4.8 and above
  • Magna Cum Laude 4.5 – 4.79
  •  Cum Laude 4.0 – 4.49

Parents will notice this change reflected in Infinite Campus, where class rank will no longer appear. Instead, GPA and grades will be displayed. As report cards are coming out soon, it’s a good time to become familiar with this new format.

This move aligns with changes that many of our neighboring high schools have made in recent years. We’ve made this change to better recognize students' achievements in a more well-rounded way. Colleges, universities, and employers place a greater emphasis on GPA, the rigor of coursework, extracurricular activities, and other aspects when reviewing applicants.

If you or your child have any questions or concerns about this change, or how it may affect college applications, our school counselors and administrators are available to provide guidance and support. Please feel free to reach out to them for assistance.
